Book: Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce : June 2010
The First 100 Pages: Okay, I'm not gonna lie, I was instantly thrown out of the book two pages in from this: "...the Price is Right theme intrusive..." What? Price is Right? What book am I reading again? I was completely not expecting that, here I was thinking Ms. Pearce was going to put me in some classic setting, not in the middle of the modern age with televisions and phones and stuff! About a minute later I was done being stupid and reopened the book with an entirely different image in my head. The prologue is good, sets us up nicely for how the story comes across, you know, in a modern setting with Bob Barker... Okay, I promise I'll get over it! We begin when the sisters (Scarlett and Rosie) are young children seven years before the events in the main story take place. A Fenris (the name for werewolves in this story), comes into their home, murders their grandmother, and scars Scarlett March by maiming her face and causing her to loose an eye.
The main story opens with Scarlett luring a Fenris into chasing her and changing into a wolf whereupon she attacks, intending to kill. She is injured and her friend Silas, who has been gone for a year, has the fantastic timing to show up just then and help her kill the wolf. Great timing aside, Silias seems like a decent guy, with a really cruddy car. Thankfully there appears to be no romantic chemistry with him and Scarlett, although when they arrive at the girl's house and we meet Rosie again, well there we go with the romance. Rosie and Silias see each other again for the first time in a year and bam, they both seem to be attracted to each other. Amazingly the romance, albeit so far, is not overpowering or distracting, and very well done.
The reader then begins to see the life the sisters have been living, how they've avoided social services, and their sisterly arguing. Jackson Pearce has a wonderful grip on social situations and the character interactions all seem genuine and tell a lot about the characters. We get to see more werewolf hunting, and Rosie's first kill by herself. I was impressed with how well rounded both our main characters are, Rosie has some self esteem issues, and Scarlett has some post traumatic stress regarding the attack from when they were children.
The first 100 pages leaves off with the sisters and Silas making the decision to move to Atlanta to hunt the hundreds of Fenris wolves that have appeared. Apparently the werewolves are searching for someone with the potential to become a new wolf, and they can only do this once every so many years when the moon phase is just right. All the wolf clans (apparently there are many and the wolves are marked by tattoos) have converged and are searching for the new person to bite.
I have to say I am incredibly engrossed in this book. It's not a long book by any shot, I've read almost 1/3 of it already and I'm loving it. Jackson Pearce is a wonderful writer and I know as soon as I'm done with this I'll be off to pick up her other books. I also hate Ms Pearce because she's the same age as me and is published and all that good stuff (I don't really hate her I'm just incredibly jealous and super happy for her!). Wonderful writers like her make me wish I had more time to work on my fiction, maybe I'll start work on a short story. Now readers, excuse me while I rush off to finish the rest of this.
